  • I got this cover “just in case” anything goes wrong with my MacBook Pro 13″.
Purchased it via Amazon as it was cheaper than the Apple Store, and it was something that I wanted to buy within the 12 month window when purchasing a new Apple product.

The main reasons why I purchased it was that I wanted the telephone support, as a recent convert to the world of Apple there are a few subtle differences. Have used the service a couple of times and the help is very good.
Also thought it would be a good idea to have the cover as it is a laptop and things are compact so in case anything goes wrong I would be covered.

Registration was easy, I would recommend to print off documents and keep with any receipts.

I would recommend this product not just for the reasons I mentioned but it does add on re-sale ability in case want to sell this Laptop.

  • First off you need to be clear about a few things. . .
All new and refurbished Macs come with 90 days free phone support and one year’s warranty. The Applecare extends both to three years. You can extend your warranty for a year after your order (not delivery).

Also it’s a warranty – if the machine breaks as a result of accident or abuse they’ll charge you for it! Having said that Apple do give you the benefit of the doubt and will mostly fix your laptop or after a certain amount of tries give you an equivalent new machine.

However you have to decide what your level of expertise is, Apple laptop parts are expensive and repairs tend to start around the £100 mark, rising to £400 odd for a screen repair and possibly even more for a logic board (motherboard) repair. Another thing to consider is that an unused warranty boosts the resale value, and that Apple gear holds its value.

For me insuring a low end laptop for these prices probably isn’t worth it. However for a Macbook Air, it probably is and any brand new design is likely to be less reliable. My criteria is if the insurance is about 10% of the full new cost it’s probably worth it.

Don’t forget educational discount can be large on these kinds of products, and if you buy while on campus you may get three years insurance thrown in for free (although you have to pay for the phone support in that case).
